Why study the Master of Economic Studies at UNE?

The Master of Economic Studies is a course work only program which provides an excellent means of obtaining advanced-level qualifications in economic analysis, applied economics, economic development, economic policy, agricultural and resource economics, efficiency and productivity analysis, or economic history.

This is a flexible award that can provide a broadening course for those students wishing to extend their knowledge of economics, or a focused program for those students seeking a greater concentration in a particular area of the discipline. Students can study environmental economics, rural development policy, labour economics, macroeconomics and trade, theoretical and applied econometrics, finance and banking, agricultural and natural resource economics, public finance and business decision making, and economic history among a wide range of available options.

Summer Semester provides an opportunity for students to fast-track their academic progression or to catch up on units to complete the degree. A selection of units is offered off-campus during the normal semester break from November to February, enabling students to study from home to accelerate their progress towards graduation. Summer Semester is offered on a fee-paying basis only.

Entry Requirements

1. The course is available on a Commonwealth supported basis only.

2. A candidate shall:

(a) have fulfilled the requirements for admission to a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at this or another university or tertiary institution, provided that the degree or qualification:

(i) is accepted by the Head of the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy or nominee as sufficient qualification for admission to the proposed program of study; and

(ii) required a minimum of three years' full-time study; or

(b) be accepted by the Head of the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy or nominee as satisfying the requirements of the Qualifying Course for Admission to Candidature for the Degree of Master.

3. After admission to candidature, a candidate shall have a program of study approved by the course coordinator.

Advanced Standing

There is no maximum to the advanced standing that may be granted for units passed at this University prior to admission to candidature that have not been counted towards another qualification. A maximum of 24 credit points of advanced standing may be granted for units passed at another university or institution that have reasonable correspondence to units offered in the Master of Economic Studies.

Admission to Candidature

1. The course is available on a Commonwealth supported basis only.

2. A candidate shall:

(i) is accepted by the Head of the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy or nominee as sufficient qualification for admission to the proposed program of study; and
(ii) required a minimum of three years' full-time study; or
(b) be accepted by the Head of the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy or nominee as satisfying the requirements of the Qualifying Course for Admission to Candidature for the Degree of Master.

3. After admission to candidature, a candidate shall have a program of study approved by the course coordinator.

Advanced Standing

1. At the discretion of the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for course work units only, passed prior to admission to candidature, provided that such units have reasonable correspondence with units offered by the school for the Master of Economic Studies for up to 24 credit points, except as provided by Advanced Standing Rule 3.4.(d), on the basis of units that have been successfully completed towards a postgraduate qualification at this or another University; or through other significant learning which the school considers equivalent to units prescribed for the Master of Economic Studies.

2. A candidate who is re-admitted to candidature following exclusion may be granted advanced standing by the school for units in which he or she previously satisfied examiners in terms of Rule 1.(b).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to four years as a part-time candidate.

In exceptional circumstances, the course coordinator may vary the requirements by extending the period of candidature for a period or periods totalling not more than 12 months.

Course Requirements

1. A candidate shall:
(a) follow a program of study prescribed by the course coordinator as set out in Rule 2.;
(b) complete such written assignments and tasks as are prescribed and pass any examination as is prescribed in each unit of the program of study.

2. To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 48 credit points.
Except with the permission of the course coordinator the program of study shall comprise:
(a) units to a minimum value of 36 credit points in the relevant major; and
(b) elective units approved by the course coordinator to a minimum value of 12 credit points from the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy; and
(c) a maximum of 18 credit points at 300 level and combination of units at 400 and/or 500 level.

Program of Study

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Approved Majors

Except with the permission of the school and on the recommendation of the course coordinator, the program of study shall include 36 credit points in the relevant major as follows:
(a) Agricultural and Resource Economics — any combination of ECON units with second digit 2 or 3.
(b) Economics — any combination of ECON and QM units.
(c) Economic Analysis — ECON 371, 408 and 409 plus other units selected from ECON 328/428 and ECON units with second digit 0, 1, 6 or 7 and QM units.
(d) Economic Development — ECON 314/414, 317/417 plus other units selected from ECON 326, 329/429, 335/435, 345, 350, 377/477, 556.
(e) Economic History — ECON314/414 plus any combination of ECON units with second digit 4 or 5.
(f) Efficiency and Productivity Analysis — ECON 377/477 plus other units selected from ECON 301, 326, 328/428, 334/434, 374/474, 376/476; QM 365.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including successful completion of one major shall be awarded the Master of Economic Studies and shall be entitled to have that major recorded on the academic transcript and testamur.
