Why study the Master of Commerce (Professional Accounting) at UNE?

The Master of Commerce (Professional Accounting) forms part of the professional educational requirements for membership of the National Institute of Accountants (NIA). It represents stage 2 of the Program in which students who have attained Member of National Institute of Accountants (MNIA) status can progress to Professional National Accountant (PNA) status. It is an eight unit course comprising four core units and four electives.

Entry Requirements

A candidate must have:

(a) completed a three year degree or its equivalent in a relevant discipline; or

(b) completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting at this or another University.

In addition, applicants must provide evidence of membership of the National Institute of Accountants.

Additional Requirements

Original documents or certified transcripts (and evidence of change of name, if applicable)

Copy of NIA Membership Renewal Notice must accompany this form (original documents will be returned)

Birth certificate or evidence of Australian citizenship/ permanent residency

Evidence of English proficiency:

Those applicants whose previous education was not in English must provide evidence of English Proficiency.

Advanced Standing

Up to 24 cp may be granted as advanced standing on the basis of units that have been successfully completed towards a postgraduate qualification at UNE or another university.

Fast Track

The trimester system allows students to study over three teaching periods each year.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate must have:
(a) completed a three year degree or its equivalent in a relevant discipline; or
(b) completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting at this or another University.
In addition, applicants must provide evidence of membership of the National Institute of Accountants.

Period of Candidature

The maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) not less than three trimesters as a full-time candidate;
(b) not more than eight trimesters as a part-time candidate.
In exceptional circumstances, the school may extend the period of candidature for a period or periods totalling not more than two trimesters.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 48 credit points.

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Master of Commerce (Professional Accounting).
