Master of Applied Theatre Studies
Why study the Master of Applied Theatre Studies at UNE?
Full-time students can only start in 1st semester
Part-time students can start in either 1st or 2nd semester
The Master of Applied Theatre Studies is a course that can be studied entirely off campus. Online technologies are used to foster interaction between students. The course allows students working in their local environment to extend their knowledge and skills in the areas of theatre production, dramaturgical research, theatre history and academic writing. The course is aimed at students who have prior experience of theatre practice as a performer, director, designer, playwright or teacher. It seeks to integrate theoretical and practical study as far as possible. It requires students to select a specific performance topic and prepare it dramaturgically, present a detailed, convincing and well-argued production proposal, take part in a practical performance of the play or other theatre event as playwright, director, actor or designer, and then use all this work as the basis for an extensively researched short dissertation which builds on the knowledge and understanding gained during the practical work on the production. There is room within the course of study for elective units which will allow students to further develop their academic skills in writing, contemporary theoretical approaches, research methodology and/or the study of theatre history.
As part of their practical work , students will prepare detailed records of their productions or performances, in an appropriate format, which will be used in the assessment process.
Students must complete the four core units totalling 36 credit points and can take as electives a further two approved 6-cp units.
Candidates enrolling in the course need to be able to arrange to participate creatively in a practical theatre project with an appropriate organisation, such as a professional, amateur or community theatre company, or a school or university. The University of New England cannot provide facilities or resources off campus for the practical component of the course-it is the responsibility of the candidate to arrange this.
