The Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting represents Stage 1 of the professional educational requirements leading to professional membership of the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) and is available to TAFE qualified members of the NIA who wish to move from Associate (ANIA) status to Member (MNIA) status of the NIA.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) have completed all the requirements for a Bachelor's relevant to the course; or

(b) have completed an Advanced Diploma (or equivalent) relevant to the award and shall have had at least two years (full-time equivalent) of relevant work experience in accountancy or a related field.

In addition, applicants must provide evidence of membership of the National Institute of Accountants.

Additional Requirements

Original documents or certified transcripts (and evidence of change of name, if applicable)

Copy of NIA Membership Renewal Notice must accompany this form (original documents will be returned)

Birth certificate or evidence of Australian citizenship/ permanent residency

Evidence of English proficiency:

Those applicants whose previous education was not in English must provide evidence of English Proficiency.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing may be granted for units completed towards a postgraduate qualification prior to admission provided that such units have reasonable correspondence to units offered in the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting to a maximum of 12 credit points.

Fast Track

The trimester system allows students to study over three teaching periods each year.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall:
(a) have completed all the requirements for a Bachelor's relevant to the course; or
(b) have completed an Advanced Diploma (or equivalent) relevant to the award and shall have had at least two years (full-time equivalent) of relevant work experience in accountancy or a related field.

In addition, applicants must provide evidence of membership of the National Institute of Accountants.

Advanced Standing

1. At the discretion of the course coordinator, on the recommendation of the relevant head of school or nominee, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for course work units only, passed prior to admission to candidature, provided that such units have reasonable correspondence with units offered by the faculty for the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting.

2. The maximum advanced standing that may be granted is 12 credit points, except for students who have previously completed units towards a Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting who shall be eligible for up to 18 credit points. Advanced standing may be granted for course work units only on the basis of units that have been successfully completed towards a postgraduate qualification at this or another university or through other significant learning that the school considers equivalent to units prescribed in the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting.

3. In Advanced Standing Rule 3 Rules 3.3. and 3.4.(a) do not apply to candidates enrolling in this award who are seeking advanced standing on the basis of an incomplete Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting.

4. A candidate who is re-admitted to candidature following exclusion, may be granted advanced standing by the faculty for units in which he or she previously satisfied Rule 2.

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be up to six 15-week trimesters as a part-time candidate.

In exceptional circumstances, the course coordinator may vary the requirements by extending the period of candidature for a period or periods totalling not more than two trimesters.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points.

Program of Study

Candidates shall complete the program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting.
