Why study the Bachelor of Natural Resources/Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning at UNE?

In addition to the natural resources management component of the program, students receive professional training in town plannng, urban and environmental design, the human environment, and the legal framework for planning and heritage conservation.

This double degree prepares graduates for the growing number of careers that require a combination of planning skills and the scientific knowledge needed to work in harmony with natural environments

Graduates will be qualified to practice as planners and natural resources managers. In addition to the natural resources component of the program, students will receive professional training in town planning, urban and environmental design, the human environment and the legal framework for planning and heritage conservation.

Graduates of this double degree program will be awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Natual Resources and Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning.

The Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning is accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia.

BNatRes and BUrbRegPlan graduates are eligible to enrol for a range of Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and course work Master programs.

Membership: Graduates are eligible for membership of the Royal Australian Planning Institute once they have gained the necessary practical experience.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Assumed knowledge is English, Mathematics and recommended study is Geography, Economics, Biology and/or Chemistry and/or Physics.

The Faculty offers Foundation Studies in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for students who do not have the recommended background knowledge.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

12 weeks of approved practical work experience

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing may be granted for previous study completed at a recognised tertiary institution.

Honours

Graduates may be awarded Honours in either the BNatRes or the BUrbRegPlan or both. The Honours level is based on grades achieved in the second, third, fourth and fifth years of the program including an Honours project which is completed in the final year. BNatRes(Hons) and BUrbRegPlan(Hons) graduates who achieve the appropriate level of Honours are eligible to apply to enrol for a research Master degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) five years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to twelve years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the two awards a candidate must pass units to the value of 240 credit points.

Program of Study

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Natural Resources and the Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning.

Award/Classes of Honours

1. Students may be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Natural Resources with Honours on the basis of an academic record deemed by the school to be of sufficient merit. To qualify for award of the degree with Honours students must:
(a) have achieved a satisfactory level of performance, as determined by the school, in the fourth year of candidature; and
(b) have completed the unit NR490.
(c) There will be two levels of Honours: First Class Honours and Second Class Honours. Second Class Honours will have two divisions: Division 1 and Division 2.
(d) An exceptionally distinguished student who has been awarded First Class Honours may be awarded a University Medal.

2. Students may be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning with Honours on the basis of an academic record deemed by the school to be of sufficient merit. To qualify for award of the degree with Honours students must:
(a) have achieved a satisfactory level of performance, as determined by the school, in the second, third and fourth years of candidature; and
(b) have completed the unit GEPL455.
(c) There will be two levels of Honours: First Class Honours and Second Class Honours. Second Class Honours will have two divisions: Division 1 and Division 2.
(d) An exceptionally distinguished student who has been awarded First Class Honours may be awarded a University Medal.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 48 credit points.
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 72 credit points.
