Why study the Bachelor of Music at UNE?

This degree offers students the opportunity to undertake a degree focused on musical study within a variety of sub disciplines. The degree comprises a set of units through which students study creative music making (both performance and composition), musicology (music history, ethnomusicology and social perspectives on music) and all aspects of musical craft (aural training, arranging, harmony.). Students from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to apply, and performance activities may encompass solo performance, jazz groups, choral performances, chamber music, world music, early music and contemporary ensembles.

Students who successfully complete the degree may continue on to a specialised honours degree or on to various courses in education to pursue careers as either private teachers or school teachers.

Intensive Schools

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

All students must complete a compulsory audition to enter the course. Assumed knowledge is any two units of English, AMEB performance standard of Grade 6.

Additional Requirements

Students are expected to have a working knowledge of, and practical experience with, music notation. Those without this knowledge may be required to undertake a bridging course prior to entry.

Advanced Standing

Students may apply for advanced standing towards the degree on the basis of previous tertiary study.

Honours

Candidates who have successfully completed the Bachelor of Music may, on the recommendation of the head of school concerned, continue to an honours year. The honours program shall include advanced coursework and a dissertation.

Scholarships

A limited number of first-year lesson scholarships are available to those studying in the internal mode. Scholarship applications form part of the audition process.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points.

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:
