Bachelor of Environmental Science

Why study the Bachelor of Environmental Science at UNE?

This program is an integral part of regional, rural and national environmental sustainability. It provides a strong scientific understanding of global environmental issues and well-developed technical and scientific competencies in field and laboratory related to: ecological principles and methods, land and environmental impact assessment, design and analysis of experiments and surveys, and spatial measurement, mapping and analysis. The BEnvSc produces graduates of high quality, who will be valued for their expertise in basic scientific disciplines and for their ability to apply their knowledge to cross-disciplinary areas, especially those relating to environmental issues. They will have opportunities to undertake a wide choice of elective units in soil, ecological restoration, conservation biology, water, wildlife or vegetation. The Bachelor of Environmental Science also provides a specialisation or major in Management where additional skills in project management, natural resources policy, land, wildlife and water management can be obtained . A fourth year is required for Honours.

Examples include positions in museums and herbaria, zoos and botanic gardens, commercial industry and government planning departments, environmental protection agencies, national parks and wildlife management, forestry, water and soil conservation, environmental consultancies conducting impact statements and assessments, mining (rehabilitation, waste control and treatment); research careers with CSIRO, university and industries.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Assumed knowledge is Mathematics and recommended knowledge is Biology and/or Chemistry

For students without the recommended background knowledge, the Faculty offers a Foundation unit in Chemistry and Mathematics

Double Degree Opportunities

A Bachelor of Environmental Science/Bachelor of Laws is offered. Successful candidates for this double degree program are awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Environmental Science and the Bachelor of Laws.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing may be granted on the basis of previous study completed at a recognised tertiary institution.

Candidates who have completed the NSW TAFE Diploma in Conservation and Land Management or equivalent are eligible to receive advanced standing towards the Bachelor of Environmental Science for up to 30 credit points. This may include up to 12 credit points of general 100-level units (RSNR110, RSNR120), and 18 credit points of elective units unspecified at 200 level.

Honours

A foruth Honours year is available to students with an above average academic record. Study is undertaken in one of the disciplines chosen for specialisation leading to the award of Bachelor of Environmental Science with Honours. The BEnvSc(Hons) degree can lead to further postgraduate study.

Admission to Candidature

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing will not be granted for units SCI395 or WORK300.

Candidates who have completed the NSW TAFE Diploma in Laboratory Technology specialising in Biological and Environmental Testing may be granted a maximum of 60 credit points of advanced standing depending on which modules they completed. Possible specified units for advanced standing are: BIOL110, BIOL120, CHEM110, ECOL203 or SOIL220.

Candidates who have completed the NSW TAFE Diploma in Laboratory Technology specialising in Environmental Monitoring and Technology may be granted a maximum of 60 credit points of advanced standing depending on which modules they completed. Possible specified units for advanced standing are: BIOL110, BIOL120, CHEM110, ECOL203 or SOIL220.

Candidates who have completed the NSW TAFE Diploma in Laboratory Technology specialising in Conservation and Land Management may be granted a maximum of 60 credit points of advanced standing depending on which modules they completed. Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points.

Management

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including shall be awarded the Bachelor of Environmental Science.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 48 credit points.
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 72 credit points.
