Unit Description

This interdisciplinary unit exposes students to a variety of perspectives on women and work. In particular, it seeks to make explicit some of the means by which assumptions about 'essential' differences between women and men impact on women's experience in the workplace for example, gendered assumptions about skills and knowledge; traditional and 'natural' (even universal) roles; inequity in the status and reward for labour; privileging of certain qualities and pursuits over others (brain work over manual work, work in financial spheres over 'caring' work). This unit is assessed by short written tasks and an essay.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. reflect on their own experience and its contribution to their perception of women's working lives;
  2. understand how values impact on the choices people make, and the connection between values and ethics;
  3. recognise that there is a culturally constructed concept of 'essential difference' which underpins assumptions about women and work;
  4. identify the means by which these concepts are maintained and reproduced in society in general and in the workplace in particular. This process will be informed by specific modes of feminist critique;
  5. critically engage with the reading/viewing materials and recognise and evaluate their own thought processes and develop skills in the logical presentation of their ideas;
  6. describe and analyse the conditions of women in a particular workplace using the concepts and frameworks identified in the unit.
