Unit Description

Survey research plays a major part in business, in government and, in general, in the administration, regulation and monitoring of contemporary society. It also supplies the dominant methodology for sociological research. This unit examines the collection and analysis of data in sociology and provides an introduction to the major components of survey methodology as an integrated technology for sociological enquiry. The unit stresses basic skills and seeks to develop a general literacy in sociological research.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. practically develop, use, and evaluate the major components of survey methodology in the context of sociological research;
  2. link these components to develop a coherent research proposal using survey methods;
  3. undertake further study, and develop more advanced skills, in quantitative and survey research in sociology.
