Unit Description

This unit deals with the scientific study of the mental processes that underlie cognitive activity: the acquisition, retention, and use of knowledge. Topics include: the historical origins if cognitive research; learning; perception; attention; memory; concepts; reasoning and consciousness. Theoretical principles and practical applications are both highlighted.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the main theoretical positions underlying current theories in cognitive psychology;
  2. express a limited understanding for each of the major areas studied in cognitive psychology;
  3. appreciate the means by which empirical information is collected to test theories;
  4. demonstrate direct experience with data collection, analysis and the writing up of an empirical report;
  5. see the link between theoretical models and practical issues in psychology.
