Unit Description

This unit introduces methods of research in the behavioural sciences. Topics covered will include measurement and operationalisation of constructs, the data collection process, and the design of simple studies. Statistics instruction includes descriptive measures, simple correlation and regression, the comparison of two or more groups in one-way and factorial designs, the logic of statistical inference, and the use of a statistical package (SPSS/PASW). Three lectures per week throughout most of the semester and three compulsory computer-based laboratory sessions.

Graduate Attributes (GA)
Attribute Taught Assessed Practised
1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Students learn how research methods and statistics underpin every area in their discipline and the strength and weaknesses of current thinking.
True True True
2 Communication Skills
Students need to analyse and interpret findings and write them up in a report and in online labs.
True True True
4 Information Literacy
Students learn how to analyse data and interpret the findings using the discipline standard applications through examples in lectures, a written report, online labs, and tested in the exam.
True True True
5 Life-Long Learning
Students are taught the limitations of different research designs and how this relates to interpretation of findings. Students learn to evaluate the literature critically and look for alternative explanations and how to improve on previous findings.
True True True
6 Problem Solving
Students are given examples of current debates in the discipline and how to address issues arising from such debates. Students work on every day problems to do with analysis and interpretation of data.
True True True
7 Social Responsibility
Research ethics are covered in lectures using examples of proper conduct and improper research conduct. Students are also taught about the responsibility surrounding the write up of findings.
