Unit Description

This unit examines emotional and social well -being in Aboriginal Communities. It explores those forces, past and present, which have placed Aboriginal emotional and social well being at risk, as well at those which enhance individual, family and community well being. Case studies, cultural challenge and ethical dilemmas throughout the unit encourage students to explore attitudes, values and professional practice as well as engage in problem solving activities.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the affect of the colonisation of Australia on indigenous communities;
  2. identify the relationship between colonisation, enforced minority status and social and emotional well being;
  3. explore strategies, practices and processes, which strengthen social and emotional well being in Indigenous communities today.

1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of this unit will be taught on an external basis only by using the online Blackboard facility providing a unit, which provides readings essential for the essay tasks. The unit is assessed through two written assignments and participation on the Bulletin Board. As a foundation unit emphasis is placed on key concepts on which to build later and more advanced topics.

2 Communication Skills
Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on the essays and participation component of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practice their communication skills through completing the assessment tasks (written through essays and discussion postings).

3 Global Perspectives
Students will be encouraged to compare Indigenous issues and concerns in Australia and those in other countries. They will be assessed on their capacity to understand these issues and their impact globally.

4 Information Literacy
Students will be taught, and directed, to relevant literature and how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed (through the essays) on their ability to identify relevant literature, and on their ability to critically analyse the literature.

5 Life-Long Learning
Through completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments (written skills; analytical skills). In addition, students who attend tutorials will be provided with the skills to debate contentious topics and develop their understanding of a topic through group activities.

Students will need to work out how to address the question and where the most appropriate material is to answer the question.

Students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the essays and discussions in tutorials or online postings.
