Unit Description

This unit commences by considering the meanings of conflict, violence and peace. Part II examines the nature and dimensions of conflict and violence in Australia. Part III looks at regional threats: the denial of human rights, conflict and the military. In Part IV, alternative means of dealing with threats to peace are examined at community, national and international levels.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. introduce major concepts of conflict, violence and peace;
  2. examine the major causes of conflict;
  3. assess different methods of achieving peace and alleviating conflict; and
  4. promote the sharing of ideas and knowledge through interdisciplinary study.

Knowledge of the peace studies discipline will be taught through lectures and tutorials. It will be assessed in all three assessments.

2 Communication Skills
Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on the essay and participation component of the unit. Students studying on-campus will learn valuable communication skills through participation in tutorials. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practice their communication skills through completing the assessment tasks (written through essays and online component).

Students are taught about conflict, violence and peace and how these operate in both the Australian and international context.

Students will be taught, and directed, to relevant literature and how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed (through the essays) on their ability to identify relevant literature, and on their ability to critically analyse the literature.

Through completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments (written skills; analytical skills). In addition, students who will be provided with the basic principles of conflict resolution, inter group dynamics and cross cultural management skills to debate contentious topics and develop their understanding of a topic through group activities.
