Unit Description

This multidisciplinary unit focuses on the impact of globalisation on the social formations of contemporary Asia. Some of the topics covered will include: work, gender, media and censorship, ethnic relations, religion and cultural expression. Students will be introduced to these and other topics through the analysis of various case studies.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. gain an understanding of key theoretical debates that center on globalisation and change in contemporary Asia;
  2. achieve an appreciation of the theoretical significance of the social, economic and political impact of globalisation on Asian social formations;
  3. develop a theoretical understanding of competing approaches to the analysis and understanding of the relationship between globalisation and change in contemporary Asia;
  4. research the relationship between globalisation and economic, social and political change in contemporary Asia according to their own specific interests and disciplinary backgrounds;
  5. exhibit an enhanced capacity to research topics and produce focused, well-structured and theoretically-informed essays that deal with issues of globalisation and change in contemporary Asia.
