Unit Description

This course work unit consists of four integrated assignments which can be completed in either This unit is specifically directed to the writing of a thesis in either Ethnomusicology or Musicology or a portfolio of compositions with the expectation that candidates will gain high quality insight into their field of study.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. formulate questions relevant to research or creative music making as related to either Ethnomusicology or Musicology or Composition;
  2. undertake higher order, independent research skills;
  3. apply advanced analytical abilities in combining a broad range of research materials, often from several media, in order to answerhis/her dissertation question;
  4. either write up an extended research dissertation or compose a series of works based upon the student's own question and independent research or examine a compositional principle/set of principles;
  5. understand the methodological issues and demonstrate a broad knowledge of the overall subject area relating to either Ethnomusicology or Musicology or Composition as developed through the course work unit.
