Unit Description

This is a thematic unit focused on song style and structure across both time and place. It examines various song genres from mediaeval chanson to German Lieder, Australian aboriginal song cycles and pop songs. The unit considers a variety of issues including vocal technique, text-tune relationships, song accompaniment, song writing, and song as poetry.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify song genres across time and place;
  2. identify and demonstrate an understanding of the interweaving musical parameters (melody, rhythm, harmony, form and texture), that constitute the song;
  3. identify relationships between the words, vocal part and accompaniment of a song;
  4. write a short song on a given theme.
