Unit Description

This unit focuses on three primary areas, advanced harmonic studies, transcription and composition. The higher level harmonic studies aspect focuses on chordal extension and substitution and chromatic harmony. Transcription considers the translation of music from one instrument's repertoire to another through in depth study and practical application. Composition has a focus on Australian music, particularly of the last 25 years.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. recognise from both aural and written perspectives advanced techniques and processes of Western harmonic theory;
  2. transcribe appropriately for a chosen instrumentation, with consideration given to Western, non-Western and historical performance practice(s);
  3. compose using a variety of techniques and instrumentation, with respect to given considerations, in this case techniques/focus employed by Australian composers in recent years;
  4. fluently communicate using music notation concepts and practices.
