Unit Description

This unit deals with concepts, methods and analytical tools necessary for understanding the dynamic nature of strategic management in different organisations. Its objective is to enable students to deal creatively with strategy issues and to develop meaningful solutions in a variety of contexts. The unit examines strategic analysis as the foundation for strategy formulation, provides an in-depth discussion of the development of strategic alternatives and presents methodologies for improving the calibre of strategy implementation and execution.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. develop the capacity to analyse organisation behaviour from a problem-solving perspective;
  2. develop the capacity to think strategically about an organisation: its present business position, its long-term direction, its resources and competitive capabilities, the calibre of its strategy and its opportunities for gaining sustainable competitive advantage;
  3. have hands-on experience in crafting strategy, evaluating carefully strategic options, and making informed strategic decisions;
  4. acquaint themselves with the managerial tasks associated with implementing and executing organisational strategies. Drilling them in the range of actions managers can take to promote competent strategy execution, and giving them confidence in being able to function effectively as part of an organisation's strategy-making processes;
  5. develop a critical understanding of Globalisation issues and challenges;
  6. students will explore critical management issues and perspectives in order to challenge current management practises.
