Unit Description

Designed to expose students to factors affecting health equity through a structured clinical experience in an area where people have poor health. The unit also develops the student's ability to plan a project, carry it out and report on it.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify economic, geographic, cultural, political, educational and social factors affecting the physical and psychological well-being of patients, their families and the population;
  2. identify the effects of resource maldistribution in delivery of health to populations and the underlying causes of maldistribution;
  3. identify the interactions between humans and their social and physical environment in an area of health inequity;
  4. identify the principles of efficient and equitable allocation and use of finite resources;
  5. identify systems of provision of health care, including their advantages and limitations, in areas of health inequity;
  6. develop the skill to act as a advocate for the improvement of health;
  7. develop the skill to be able to integrate relevant information about patient backgorund/disadvantage into standard medical history taking, treatment planning and delivery;
  8. demonstrate respect for community values, including an appreciation of the diversity of human background and cultural values;
  9. demonstrate an awareness of the need for cost-effectiveness to allow maximum benefit from the available resources;
  10. demonstrate an appreciation of the importance and relevance of economic, geographic, cultural, political, educational, psychological and social factors to the physical health of their patients.
