Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
-
identify economic, geographic, cultural, political, educational and social factors affecting the physical and psychological well-being of patients, their families and the population;
-
identify the effects of resource maldistribution in delivery of health to populations and the underlying causes of maldistribution;
-
identify the interactions between humans and their social and physical environment in an area of health inequity;
-
identify the principles of efficient and equitable allocation and use of finite resources;
-
identify systems of provision of health care, including their advantages and limitations, in areas of health inequity;
-
develop the skill to act as a advocate for the improvement of health;
-
develop the skill to be able to integrate relevant information about patient backgorund/disadvantage into standard medical history taking, treatment planning and delivery;
-
demonstrate respect for community values, including an appreciation of the diversity of human background and cultural values;

demonstrate an awareness of the need for cost-effectiveness to allow maximum benefit from the available resources;
