Unit Description

This unit is designed to ensure students acquire the essential medical science knowledge in relation to problems of the neurological, psychiatric and endocrine systems. It is based on a series of common medical problems of these systems.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the following areas as they relate to the neurological, psychiatric and endocrine systems;
  2. scientific method relevant to biological, behavioural and social sciences at a level adequate to provide a rational basis for present medical practice, and to acquire and incorporate the advances in knowledge which will occur over their working life;
  3. the normal structure, function and development of the human body and mind at all stages of life, the factors that may disturb these, and the interactions between body and mind;
  4. the aetiology, pathology, symptoms and signs, natural history and prognosis of common mental and physical ailments in children, adolescents, adults and the aged. A more detailed knowledge is required of those conditions that require urgent assessment and treatment.
