Unit Description

Enables students to gain an understanding of the public health issues related to the investigation, management and prevention of health problems in groups and communities, as well as gaining an insight into research methodology and a critical appreciation of the medical literature with an emphasis on evidence-based practice.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate capacity to use appropriate library and other information resources;
  2. demonstrate basic skills required to pursue an appropriately targeted independent enquiry relating to a simple medical problem;
  3. identify relevant information sources required to answer a simple medical problem;
  4. understand the different epidemiologic study designs and be able to calculate relevant measures of effect such as relative risk and odds ratio;
  5. identify relevant study designs that have been used in published scientific studies;
  6. assess and interpret results of scientific studies relevant to common medical problems;
  7. interpret results of commonly used statistical methods as they are presented in published medical literature;
  8. demonstrate basic understanding of the requirements for valid diagnostic tests;
  9. identify the common health care problems in the community and their modifiable risk factors.
