Unit Description

This unit draws on the expertise of a range of academic staff and community resources in order to give a wide range of views on Indigenous issues. It is an ideal unit for students who wish to pursue a career in Indigenous affairs because it is structured to give specific legal knowledge on a range of social issues that affect Indigenous Australians. Students who have an interest in a career in the social welfare sector are particularly well catered for by the unit.

LS 264 is for students doing non-law course.

LS 364 is offered to students doing law courses.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. examine the cultural factors that shaped the first contact histories;
  2. examine the operation of the British legal system as it evolved and impacted on Indigenous Australians under colonisation;
  3. examine the impact of these laws and policies on Indigenous Australians;
  4. examine the effectiveness of the evolving Australian legal system in delivering justice to Indigenous people; and
  5. examine the positions of Indigenous Australians in their response to colonisation.
