Unit Description

The languages of Asia are both linguistically fascinating, and of great practical and cultural importance to the global environment of the 21st century. This unit overviews the diversity of languages in Southeast Asia and East Asia, and describes the main sociocultural and linguistic similarities and differences among them. The unit teaches appropriate linguistic techniques for analysing characteristic features of many of these languages, such as tones, classifiers, serial verb constructions, honorifics, and non-alphabetic scripts. Both national and minority languages are covered. The unit is supported by a variety of online tools including online assessment. Web access is essential.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe the diversity of languages and language situations in Southeast Asia and East Asia;
  2. identify and demonstrate an understanding of the most important similarities and differences in linguistic structure among the languages of Southeast Asia and East Asia;
  3. apply appropriate techniques of linguistic analysis to data sets of moderate complexity from Asian languages;
  4. identify and demonstrate an advanced level of understanding of some of the important sociocultural aspects of various Asian languages;
  5. assess how linguistic facts about these languages are relevant to issues in linguistic theory.
