Unit Description

This unit provides an introduction to descriptive and theoretical approaches to the analysis of sound systems across languages, building on the knowledge from foundation units in linguistics. The focus is on problem solving and data analysis, rather than theory, though some current theoretical perspectives are also discussed, along with applications to first and second language learning in particular. Web access is essential.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. analyse the sound systems of English and other languages;
  2. understand the difference between natural and unnatural sound changes and processes;
  3. apply the theoretical principles behind analytical decisions regarding sound system;
  4. understand the applications of phonological principles and theory to problems in first and second language learning;
  5. read and critique articles in current phonological research, or analyses from different theoretical positions.

Graduate Attributes (GA)
Attribute Taught Assessed Practised
1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Students will understand the principles of phonetics and phonology. It is taught by directed study and reading, practised in online tutorial and exercises, and assessed via all assessment tasks
True True True
2 Communication Skills
The unit will focus on analysis and argumentation, and will thereby improve students' communication skills in those two areas.
True True True
3 Global Perspectives
The unit will use data from a range of languages.
True True
4 Information Literacy
The unit will require access to the web and use of online resources and tools.
True
5 Life-Long Learning
The unit will encourage students to think critically about the structures of languages they are exposed to.
True
6 Problem Solving
Much of the assessment will be based around problem solving, using logical analytical techniques but also requiring creative thinking to solve in many cases. Students' problem solving skills are developed and assessed in their assessment tasks.
True True True
7 Social Responsibility
Students will need to be mindful of their ethical responsibilities, both to human subjects and to other students.
True
8 Team Work
Participation in online discussions requires engagement and interactivity with other students in developing collaborative skills and building group knowledge. Part of the assessment ('online prac exercise') will involve student collaboration to reach a joint answer to a data problem.
