Unit Description

This unit introduces students to the main strands of Applied Linguistics, giving an overview of the nature of the discipline and some of the controversies which exist within it. Topics covered include: language in social context, language use the history and practice of language teaching, discourse analysis, language attitudes and ideologies, language policy, language and the law and language in education. Web access is essential.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the diverse scope of the field of Applied Linguistics;
  2. demonstrate their familiarity with current issues and theories in Applied Linguistics;
  3. understand the major linguistic and applied linguistic terms and concepts raised in the context of this unit;
  4. discuss critically the major issues and themes raised in the unit; and
  5. undertake some forms of linguistic analysis and research in the area of second language learning and selected areas of applied linguistics.
