Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

formulate research questions pertaining to Linguistics;

apply higher order, independent research skills;

demonstrate advanced analytical abilities, in combining a broad range of research materials, often from several media, in order to answer research question;

demonstrate the ability to write up an extended research dissertation, based upon the student's own question and independent research;

In this unit you will required to apply critical thinking to linguistic issues, and to solve problems critically and intelligently. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and deconstruct their research question and to integrate theory and literature into their answer. Students will need to work out how to address the question and where the most appropriate material is to answer the question.

Social Responsibility
The study of linguistics encourages students to develop their intercultural awareness and give a sense of the relationships that hold between language structures and social organisation. We hope that the ability to make connections between language use and wider socio-political issues makes students more socially responsible members of society.
