Unit Description

The languages of Asia are both linguistically fascinating, and of great practical and cultural importance to Australia. This unit introduces the diversity of languages in Southeast Asia and East Asia, and describes the main sociocultural and linguistic similarities and differences among them. Both national and minority languages are covered. The unit is supported by a variety of online tools including online assessment. Web access is essential.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe the diversity of languages and language situations in Southeast Asia and East Asia;
  2. identify and explain similarities and differences in linguistic structure among the languages of Southeast Asia and East Asia;
  3. apply appropriate techniques of linguistic analysis to simple data sets from Asian languages;
  4. identify and explain some of the important sociocultural aspects of various Asian languages.
