Unit Description

This unit builds on the morphology and syntax from foundation units in linguistics. Taking a typological perspective on the main morphological and syntactic phenomena of the world's languages, it covers standard analytical techniques including word formation rules and tree structures. There is an emphasis on problem solving and data analysis. While the emphasis is on analysis, rather than theory, it also introduces some theoretical and conceptual issues that arise in language description. The unit is supported by a variety of online tools including online assessment. Web access is essential.

  1. analyse morphological and syntactic data in any language using the techniques of descriptive grammar;
  2. describe the major types of morphological and syntactic phenomena found among the languages of the world;
  3. define the technical terms and discourse of morphological and syntactic analysis.
