Unit Description

This unit examines issues, which are impacting upon Indigenous communities today including the areas of education, health, land and resource management and law and justice. In the unit we examine the many reform and political agendas associated with these issues. The unit provides students with problem solving skills and understandings relevant to the contemporary professional workplace.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches and perspective of considering issues in Australian Aboriginal Studies;
  2. develop an appreciation of a diverse range of historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous Australian cultures;
  3. develop an awareness of specific factors which contributed to Australian colonial practices in both historical and contemporary times, and to initiate social, political and cultural practices to support students personal and professional development;
  4. identify current issues affecting Indigenous Australian communities and their responses to land rights, health, education and social justice;
  5. critically evaluate factors of social inequality and cultural disadvantage and to deal with these issues, and to facilitate understanding through contemporary Indigenous Australian responses, contributions and initiatives through social, political and cultural practices to support students personal and professional development.

1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Knowledge of the indigenous discipline is taught on an external basis only with material provided online through Blackboard. The unit is assessed through one written assignment and online assessment and participation. As a foundation unit emphasis is placed on key concepts on which to build later and more advanced topics.

2 Communication Skills
Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on the essay and participation component of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practice their communication skills through completing the assessment tasks (written through essays and online exercises).

3 Global Perspectives
Students will examine a range of issues impacting upon Indigenous communities today both nationally and internationally, and is part of understanding global heritages.

4 Information Literacy
Students will be taught, and directed, to relevant indigenous literature and how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed (through the essay and online assessments) on their ability to identify and critically analyse the literature.

5 Life-Long Learning
Through completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments (written skills; analytical skills). In addition, students who participate online will be provided with the skills to debate contentious topics and develop their understanding of a topic through group activities.

6 Problem Solving
Students will be assessed on their ability to deconstruct the assignment questions and to integrate theory and literature into their answer. Students will need to work out how to address the questions and where the most appropriate material is to answer the questions.

7 Social Responsibility
Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to provide balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the assignment questions and discussion in online postings.

8 Team Work
Students will practice their teamwork skills through participating in online discussion postings. They will be required to discuss the weekly topics with their fellow students in a thoughtful and respectful manner (practice).
