Unit Description

This unit provides students with knowledge of theory and practice for effective engagement, assessment and intervention with mental health consumers and their carers. Particular emphasis is given to developing skills necessary for effective interprofessional rural mental health practice. Students learn how to recognise and respond to people presenting with common mental illnesses and disorders using the DSM-IV framework. Skills for promoting mental health, preventing mental illness, the importance of early detection and interventions are developed. The main evidence-based treatments, the referral process and documentation requirements, and ethical and professional responsibilities are explored. Case studies are utilised throughout the unit to demonstrate the difficulty of co-morbidity and issues affecting people living in rural and remote communities.

Students will be required to submit a DVD recordng of a brief counselling session that they have conducted with a client to be assessed.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe the major mental health disorders and co-morbidities, using the DSM-IV as a diagnostic framework;
  2. describe evidence-based interventions for mental health promotion, prevention, early intervention, illness management and recovery;
  3. plan mental health care delivery that takes account of the needs of people with mental health issues and their carers across the lifespan, in a variety of settings and with different target populations;
  4. demonstrate safe, interprofessional, and therapeutic practice when planning health care for people with mental health issues and their carers;
  5. utilise critical reflection to enhance clinical practice in mental health; and
  6. apply the principles of referral and necessary documentation.
