Unit Description

This unit explores the prevalence and characteristics of different types of traumatic experiences and their impact on individuals, families and those who support them. The issue of resilience in the face of adversity is examined. Different ways of working with trauma, violence, sexual assault, and posttraumatic stress disorder are explored including critical incident debriefing. A range of theoretical perspectives and clinical interventions are critically analysed and applied to specific cases. The possibility of vicarious traumatisation of carers is also examined.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe different types of traumatic experiences and their potential impact on individuals, families, and those who support them;
  2. understand how people develop resilience in the face of adversity;
  3. describe and evaluate ways of working with people who have experienced trauma or who are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder;
  4. evaluate the use of critical incident debriefing and ways to prevent vicarious traumatisation; and
  5. develop a treatment plan for working with a client suffering from complex trauma or co-morbidity, including the use of referral and supervision.
