Unit Description

This unit provides an overview of qualitative and quantitative research methods applied to health issues and uses health research examples. It examines research design issues used in applied health and clinical qualitative and quantitative studies and provides the students with the knowledge to evaluate and critique the published literature.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts involved in both qualitative and quantitative research;
  2. demonstrate knowledge of appropriate research design to address the question being asked in the study;
  3. describe basic issues associated with sampling and data collection;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of data analysis techniques in principle, for both qualitative and quantitative research;
  5. find refereed journal articles that are based on research and relate to clinical practice;
  6. critically analyse published journal articles in terms of the strengths and weaknesses of the research methodology, sampling, data collection, and data analysis.
