Unit Description

This unit is divided into two main topics: workforce planning and human resource development. The first topic introduces students to the concept of workforce planning (also referred to as human resource planning (HRP)) and its role in the recruitment, selection and retention of staff. The key issues to be explored in this topic are: defining human resource planning; reviewing the evolution of HRP; understanding how HRP is linked to achieving the strategic goals of the organisation; how to conduct workforce planning; understanding the benefits of HRP; exploring the links to other areas of HR activities; and examining the critical issues in conducting workforce planning.

The second major topic explores the concept of human resource (or staff) development. HRD is about ensuring that the organisation has the staff with the knowledge and skills required in order to achieve its strategic objectives. It is a focus on both individual and organisational development. Taking a strategic focus, the topic will examine how to design, implement and evaluate a range of human resource development programs/initiatives in organisations, with a particular focus on the management level.
