Unit Description

This unit will explore and critique the literature about the learning organisation and the related concepts of developing a learning or a training culture. It will examine how learning can be embedded within the structures of an organisation and the implications of this concept for trainers, training managers and human resource developers.

  1. understand the concept of a learning organisation and the relationship to other similar concepts;
  2. analyse and critique the literature on the learning organisation;
  3. apply the theory and practice of the learning organisation to their own organisation.

Students will be required to understand and analyse developments in global systems of workplace training such as those in Europe, USA and Asia. They will be assessed on this understanding in an essay. They will be asked to apply this understanding in their workplace in a journal of reflective practice.

5 Life-Long Learning
The concept and practice of lifelong learning in an organisational context will be the focus of this unit. Students will be encouraged to critically reflect on this concept as it is applied to practice within their organisation.

6 Problem Solving
Students will be encouraged to reflect on the concept of problems in the application of the learning organisation in the context of their immediate workplaces and to make a plan of action to overcome these problems. They will be assessed on their ability to apply the ideas and practices of the learning organisation to deal with these problems.

8 Team Work
The practices of the learning organisation are essentially developed at a team level. Students will be encouraged to set up teams in the workplace to establish learning organisation practices within their workplaces. They will have the option of developing a simulate team approach where this is not practicable for assessment purposes.
