Unit Description

This unit will examine theories and approaches to the study of decision making in managerial contexts. Emphasis will be placed on establishing the limits of human decision-making capacity, how such limits are currently circumvented and how these limits may be lifted through the use of decision-support systems. Group conflict and negotiation will also be explored.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of the various perspectives and principles which underpin our understanding of human-thinking and decision-making processes and how those processes are embedded in the managerial context;
  2. demonstrate skill in applying the various concepts implicated in the first aim to the diagnosis of judgmental errors and other constraints and problems which may arise in association with managerial thinking and decision making;
  3. use constructive procedures and practices which managers can employ to improve the quality and consistency of their thinking and decisions;
  4. demonstrate a capacity to think organisational decisions more systemically and complexly.
