Unit Description

This unit specifically addresses resource management in a context of globalisation; advances in information and communications technologies and the shift towards knowledge based economies. It examines the reasons for public sector reform and the key of features of new public sector management. The unit also considers the role of government as a regulator in the marketplace.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. clarify the nature and types of organisational resources and the different resource management issues which need to be addressed by actors at different levels in a specific organisational setting;
  2. analyse the role of resource considerations in managerial leadership;
  3. identify the problems and issues for resource management posed by a shift to a knowledge based economy in a global environment;
  4. review the reasons for and the history of public sector management reform and the importance of resource issues in these reforms;
  5. analyse the approaches and mechanisms for resource management, such as accrual accounting, downsizing, outsourcing and benchmarking;
  6. evaluate the strengths and limitations of focusing on resources in organisational management.
