Unit Description

This unit aims to introduce students to the study of modern German drama and prose. Discussion of the texts will consider such topics as the relationship between the text and the time when it was written, that is, its historical and sociological context. The texts will also be discussed in terms of the way in which they present their subject matter, that is with regard to literary issues such as style, imagery and symbolism.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. competently read and understand modern German drama, prose and film;
  2. understand cultural and societal differences in German speaking countries as portrayed in the genres of drama, prose and film;
  3. critically discuss literary devices, such as style, symbolism, imagery, narrative perspective etc and filmic devices (mise-en, scene, music, colour, film stock);
  4. use research tools and will have further developed the skill of essay writing.
