Unit Description	This unit aims to introduce students to the study of German short stories. Discussion of the stories will consider such topics as the relationship between the text and the time when it was written, that is, the historical and sociological context in which the stories originated. Students will also learn to recognise how the subject matter in stories is presented with regard to literary issues such as style, imagery and symbolism.

Learning Outcomes (LO)

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

competently read and understand German short stories;
understand cultural and societal differences in German speaking countries as portrayed in the genre of the short story;
critically discuss literary devices, such as style, symbolism, imagery, narrative perspective etc;
use research tools to develop the skills of essay writing.

2	Communication Skills Students will learn how to discuss and write about literature and thus improve their communication skills.
3	Global Perspectives Reading, discussing and writing about German literary texts requires students to bring to the reading their own cultural awareness thus creating an inter cultural competence and global perspective.
4	Information Literacy Students will make use of the internet to supplement their reading for the set literature. Students will also contribute to discussions on the set literature on the Bulletin Board. These activities will further their information literacy.
5	Life-Long Learning Reading, reflecting, discussing and writing about literature in the context of students' own experiences will contribute to lifelong learning in all aspects of students' lives.
6	Problem Solving Critically discussing and writing about literature involves applying logical, critical and creative thinking of the highest order.
7	Social Responsibility By developing students' intercultural awareness through exposure to ethical and social issues in the literature, this unit will also foster their sense of social responsibility.
8	Team Work Discussion groups in class or on the Bulletin Board involves team work. As the Bulletin Board is not compulsory it may be that some students will not engage as actively in team work as others.
