Unit Description

This unit focuses on further developing competency in German in all four skills: speaking, writing, listening and understanding at a level of difficulty between intermediate and advanced, with an emphasis on the type of language needed in a professional setting. Students will be assisted in achieving this goal through a variety of teaching strategies and material specially prepared for learning about the workplace. Students will learn about the German working environment and culture while at the same time furthering their linguistic skills.

  1. speak, read, understand and write competently in German in the context of the workplace;

  3. demonstrate an understanding of conventions in German workplace and formal situations.

In this unit students will learn to communicate effectively in the various registers of German. In class, and for off-campus students via the Bulletin Board, students will also discuss linguistic problems in English, thus furthering their overall communication skills.

Through reading texts from a variety of sources, students will gain a deeper understanding of the cultures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland which will require them to see their own cultures in a global context.
