Unit Description

This unit is designed for students who have successfully completed GRMN101. The emphasis throughout the unit is on the acquisition of the basic language skills of speaking, comprehending, reading and writing German. A basic aim of the unit is to develop communicative competence in everyday German.

In this unit students will acquire the ability to communicate in German and understand German.

2 Communication Skills
In this unit students will learn to communicate effectively in the target language German. In-class, and for off-campus students via the Discussion Board, students will also discuss linguistic problems in English, thus furthering their overall communication skills. Their ability to communicate will be assessed by requiring them to speak and write meaningful German within the context of a realistic scenario, thus preparing them both linguistically and culturally to communicate in real-life situations in the target language country.

3 Global Perspectives
The unit exposes students to foreign cultures, viz. the cultures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and requires them to see their own cultures in a global context. Learning a language requires learning about the culture integral to the language. Students will be explicitly taught about appropriate behaviour in the target language countries, through readings and roleplaying, and will be assessed on this knowledge in their language assignments as evidenced by appropriate use of polite forms of address, surnames and titles etc.

4 Information Literacy
Students will coordinate their learning by negotiating an integrated mult-media learning package consisting of websites, videos, CDs and a textbook with appendices. They are given weekly outlines to help them do this, and are encouraged to seek their own comprehensive input through a selection of links to authentic German, Austrian and Swiss websites, including a variety of materials ranging from media outlets to restaurant menus and train timetables.

5 Life-Long Learning
Negotiation of target language materials described above provide students with the necessary life-long skills that can be transferred to many disciplines. The accuracy, attention to detail and good editing skills required to produce texts and utterances in a foreign language, which students are required to exercise in assessment tasks, prepare them well for other learning situations.

6 Problem Solving
Students are taught and assessed within an enquiry-based framework They are required to work out the best way of completing a task, including reference to completing it within the target cultural context, as well as where the relevant information which will be needed can be found. Learning grammatical structures and applying them in speaking and writing also involves problem solving at various levels.

7 Social Responsibility
By developing students' intercultural awareness, students learn that there are different norms and expectations depending upon the cultural context within which one is operating. Intercultural awareness is developed through specific teaching strategies as well as observation by the students.
