Unit Description

This unit is designed for students with no previous knowledge of the language or insufficient knowledge to qualify for GRMN201. The emphasis throughout the unit is on the acquisition of the basic language skills of speaking, comprehending, reading and writing. A basic aim of the unit is to develop communicative competence in everyday German.

  1. hold basic conversations in German and read basic texts;

In class, and for off-campus students via the Discussion Board, students will also discuss linguistic problems in English, thus furthering their overall communication skills. The unit exposes students to foreign cultures, viz. the cultures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and requires them to see their own cultures in a global context.
