Unit Description

The purpose of this unit is to provide a practical background and understanding of the research process; from data collection and analysis to the interpretation, organisation and presentation of results; including formulating hypotheses, selecting methodologies, collecting and processing qualitative and quantitative data, and the organisation and presentation of results.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand a wide range of different research methods and be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of various research methods and their associated techniques;
  2. develop a coherent research design in order to organise and conduct research;
  3. be aware of the potential problems pertaining to the planning and conduct of research;
  4. interpret results of a wide variety of research methods;
  5. understand the principles and protocols required in the conduct of ethical research; and
  6. critically evaluate the research work of others.
