Students are taught philosophical and historical development of geographical thought relevant to their chosen area of physical geography and their depth of understanding is assessed in all assignments. This geographical worldview is expected to influence students' perspectives on future areas of research.

Students at this level of study are expected to be competent in written, verbal and graphical communication though guidance is still provided for specific branches of physical geography where relevant. Written and graphical communication skills are assessed through the various assignments.

Throughout the unit students will develop an understanding of physical geography as an international discilpline in which debates and discussions involving practitiioners from a range of nations have shaped its objects of study and worldview.
