Unit Description

In this unit, students learn about the manner in which regulatory theory, powers and duties and ethics apply to a core area of professional practice, Development Control. It enables better understanding of the regulatory framework and the decision-making process within which planners operate. It brings together theoretical, jurisdictional, design and communication aspects of planning in applied settings. Learning is facilitated through group discussion, unit readings, assessment tasks and on-line media. A non-mandatory intensive school is held for this unit.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. discuss contemporary planning practice principles and theoretical frameworks;
  2. demonstrate an understanding of the social, cultural, ethical, economic and legal issues relating to planning practice and development control;
  3. communicate effectively and competently the relationship between theory and practice in the field of planning and development control;
  4. show an understanding of the regulatory framework and decision-making process within which planners operate;
  5. implement a range of skills applicable to planning practice in the area of development control.
