Unit Description

This unit promotes critical reflection upon the processes involved in reading and writing. It encourages students to analyse their own reading experience in relation to theories concerning the reader's reception and the writer's production of texts. Students are exposed to critical thinking and personal reflection by writers past and present. The unit pays particular attention to issues surrounding the production, publication and reception of writing in English. Students are asked to analyse the skills necessary for writing in different genres, and apply these skills in several short writing assignments and one major project.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. show improved skills in reading and writing that are appropriate to the study of English and English education;
  2. demonstrate a familiarity with a range of contemporary critical approaches to understanding the processes involved in reading and writing, and theories concerning readers' reception of texts;
  3. refer to a range of historical and contemporary examples from practising writers (novelists/critics/journalists/poets) that explore aspects of reading and writing;
  4. understand some of the practical and theoretical aspects of writing and composition across a variety of descriptive, analytical, and persuasive modes and genres (essays, autobiographical accounts, literature, reviews, interviews, and other pieces);
  5. develop enhanced critical and communicative skills that will be of academic and professional benefit;
  6. develop an awareness of social, ethical and professional issues arising in the practice of writing for publication.
