Unit Description

This unit provides a working knowledge of written communication skills in an academic context and is suitable for any undergraduate course in the University. Class work focuses on research strategies, language usage and essay writing. Students should be proficient in English and are expected to achieve basic word processing competency in their own time. Please note that this is not a creative writing, remedial or ESL unit. The focus is on formal writing for academic purposes. This unit has a compulsory online component. Students are expected to submit online answers to regular grammar quizzes.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. complete a range of shorter tasks to develop and practise research and writing skills;
  2. understand and use appropriate grammar, spelling, punctuation and presentation in written tasks;
  3. identify and access relevant library resources, conduct keyword searches, compile bibliographies and take notes;
  4. evaluate the content and presentation of other students' written work (on-campus students are expected to read their work aloud in class; both on-campus and online students are encouraged to exchange drafts and comments via email and website Discussion Board);
  5. plan and draft a formal essay on a topic, taking account of group feedback, and revise and edit the essay.
