Unit Description

This unit examines the ideas of a range of significant innovators in western educational thought and the relevance of these ideas for current educational issues. Such issues include differing approaches to the teaching-learning process, the teacher-pupil relationship, freedom and authority, punishment and discipline, role of the state in education.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate awareness of the development of educational thought in the West from the time of Plato to the present day;
  2. understand how this thought has impacted on current practice; and
  3. demonstrate awareness of the key philosophical issues underlying current educational practice and have developed a point of view about these.

Students study the development of educational thought in different contexts: Ancient Greece. 18th century Europe. 19th century America and present age across the West and Soviet Union. This is assessed in all assignments.

One of the main aims of the unit is to get students to develop their own philosophical perspective on education and apply this to their teaching experience. This is assessed in all assignments and assignment 3 in particular.

This is central to the whole unit. Critical thinking is what is sought in all work in the unit. Students learn these skills partly by studying the conflicting philosophical theories presented in the unit e.g. the problem solving approach of John Dewey.
