Unit Description

This unit introduces students to the social contexts of schooling. Itst focus is teachers, contexts and pedagogy, all of which are variously examined through the analysis of 'Hollywood' representations of teaching. The unit explores the 'reality' of Hollywood's teachers, schools and students, enabling learners to critically reflect upon the kind of teacher they might like to become.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify the assumed and preferred views of schooling that inform teaching-focused films;
  2. reflect upon one's own memories and assumptions of the good teacher and the good student, and upon the kind of teacher they would like to become;
  3. consider and evaluate a range of pedagogical approaches for responding to teaching and learning in different contexts;
  4. identify how various sociological dynamics shape teaching and learning contexts; and
  5. critically analyse media representations of society and teaching.

Students are introduced to the sociology of education at the very foundation level. Their understanding of this discipline and knowledge will be taught and practiced through lectures and tutorials. It will be assessed in both assignments.

This unit requires students to improve their understanding and knowledge of how to communicate effectively in a socio-economically, and culturally diverse education contexts. This understanding and knowledge will be taught through lectures and tutorials. It will also be practiced in tutorials.

The unit considers the factors contributing to good teaching in a range of contexts. This should enable students to see beyond their own particular socio-economic and cultural viewpoint. The capacity to see beyond one?s social position will be taught through lectures and tutorials. It will be practiced and assessed in both assignments.

4 Information Literacy
Assignments require Internet searches and word processing; discussion of classroom practices includes consideration of how ICT is used in classrooms and the resulting effect on learning. Information literacy skills will be practiced and assessed through the assignments as will the ability to critically analyse the discipline?s literature.

An understanding that knowledge is socially constructed and historically and spatially located is fundamental to lifelong learning. Dispositions towards lifelong learning will be assessed in the assignment tasks.
