Notes

Students who enrol in the Graduate Diploma in Education in Secondary Music should have a Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent. The New South Wales Institute of Teachers now has a mandatory requirement for qualification as a Secondary Specialist Music Teacher, which states that the student must have completed units of study of Western art music.

Unit Description

The unit aims to develop pre-service teachers' pedagogical skills and knowledge for Secondary Music Years 11-12 by applying recent research, theory, and practice. In the unit, pre-service teachers will develop music teaching skills, resources, and strategies for Years 11-12: by applying the curriculum requirements of the NSW HSC Music Syllabus or equivalent in other States/organisations; for performance, composition, musicology, aural skills, and music ICT, using a range of musical styles, periods, and genres; for conducing co-curricular performance groups; and 4) considering diverse school contexts and students' various needs in the music classroom.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an in-depth understanding of pedagogical skills and knowledge for teaching Secondary Music for Years 11-12 (or equivalent in other States/organizations);
  2. demonstrate research-based knowledge of the pedagogies for teaching Aural skills, Performance, Composition, and Musicology for Years 11-12;
  3. incorporate a wide range of teaching resources and innovative strategies in learning and teaching activities for Years 11-12;
  4. adjust to diverse teaching contexts and student needs through problem solving skills and reflections for Years 11-12 Senior Music teaching;
  5. design and implement lesson sequences using knowledge of the NSW curriculum requirements for HSC Music or Years 11-12 Senior Music (or equivalent in other States/organizations); and
  6. develop classroom environment that facilitates problem solving skills and creativity through musical activities for Years 11-12.

Assignments of this unit require students to describe their teaching strategies for adopting diverse teaching contexts and student needs through problem solving skills and reflections, and designing lesson plans and implementing their teaching ideas during practicum. 3 Global Perspectives
A learning Outcome of this unit is to develop ability to adjust to diverse teaching contexts and student needs for Years 11-12 Music teaching. To achieve this Outcome, students discuss various teaching contexts, including lack of teaching resources in schools and teaching in rural/city and public/private/Catholic schools, and incorporate the diverse teaching contexts in their assignments for lesson plans and developing teaching strategies. This contributes to developing students' global perspectives in music teaching.

5 Life-Long Learning
Developing effective teaching strategies, which is Assignment 2 of this unit, is a continuing process for teachers. That is, teacher profession requires 'continuing professional learning', which is also required for all teachers by the NSW Institute of Teachers. This is discussed during the Intensive School of this unit.

8 Team Work
During the Intensive School for this unit, students learn to work in groups for discussions and musical activities. Also, students discuss the importance of team work in school contexts, e.g., working with other music teachers as a team. This discussion is incorporated in their Assignment 2 for developing teaching strategies.
