Unit Description

The aim of this unit is to supplement and extend learning undertaken in the unit EDAE950 that introduces students to teach Visual Arts to Years 7-10 in the secondary school. This unit incorporates current reforms in visual arts curriculum development, recent research in junior secondary visual arts education, and national and state professional teaching and learning standards. Emphasis will be placed on developing an understanding of curriculum planning, implementation, and assessment. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to effectively teach, manage, evaluate, and organise resources to teach junior secondary school students within the broader curriculum. Attention will be given to the educational requirements of other Australian states as well as those of NSW.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate a broad understanding of the study of the visual arts including recent theory and practice, and conventions of practice in art criticism and art history;
  2. identify and articulate clear learning goals that reflect important conceptual understandings of visual arts education at the secondary level, particularly Stage 4;
  3. demonstrate a research-based knowledge of a range of strategies for teaching and assessing visual arts practices in the visual arts classroom;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of practices relating to that of an art writer and critic and the conceptual frames used to guide student critical investigations;
  5. demonstrate professional competence in creating art works and recognise the accountability of the teacher in terms of ensuring safety and social responsibility in all teaching and learning processes and practices; and
  6. understand the place of secondary visual arts in the continuum of learning in the Arts K-12 and the links between Stage 3 and 4.

Students are taught about the place of secondary visual arts in the continuum of learning particularly in regards to School Arts K-12 developmental links. Students themselves participate in on-going personal development as both artist practitioners and as arts teachers.

7 Social Responsibility
In one of the study modules students investigate the social role that art in schools play in defining values. Consideration is given to social and cultural education through Visual Arts. A major aspect of this unit is exploring personal values and ideology in relation to art education. Developing empathy, respect and understanding within the classroom is promoted through encouraging acceptance of alternative viewpoints. Studying the effects of popular culture and ideals, generational change, and concepts of student mental and physical welfare in the art classroom are incorporated in the unit of study- Students learn and are tested on their knowledge of health and safety factors within Visual Arts activities.

Students are required to participate in class group forums and blogs contributing and debating ideas and issues.
